LAUNE x Studio Thorn
Studio Thorn is a floral design studio based in New York, known for arrangements that balance structure, seasonality, and a clean, modern style. The name reflects that mix of softness and strength, and the work itself is guided by instinct and a clear point of view. In this interview, founder Mollie Levy, talks about how the studio began, what inspires her, and how she’s shaping the next stage of Studio Thorn.
1. Tell me about Studio Thorn. What inspired the name?
Studio Thorn is a floral design studio based in downtown New York City, rooted in the art of contrast. Crafting floral compositions that tell stories, evoke feeling, and transform spaces through sculptural, seasonally driven design. After going back and forth on what I wanted to call the brand, Thorn came to be really organically. My middle name is Rose, so I knew I wanted to incorporate that somehow into the brand, but I didn’t want it to be so on the nose. A thorn is a symbol of protection and presence and that idea really resonated with me.
2. What is the LAUNE (mood) of Studio Thorn?
The LAUNE of Studio Thorn is modern, elegant, and unexpected.
3. What inspires you?
The city is woven into everything I create. The energy, the contrasts, the quiet pockets of beauty tucked between all the movement, it all shapes my perspective. Studio Thorn is rooted in that balance, the romance of nature meeting the rhythm of the city.
4. What does the creative process look like? How did you get interested in floral arrangements?
So much of what I create is based on my mood and gut instincts. Every design is truly one of a kind. I love how certain flowers and colors can evoke an instant emotion, almost like art, it can look and feel different to everyone. I love how it’s all subjective! My friends and family always joke that floral design was this secret talent I was harboring. I never took a class or anything, it’s all been self taught.
5. Storytelling is central to Studio Thorn’s identity. How do you approach this in your arrangements?
I start by getting to know a client’s story, the feeling they want to evoke, the colors that speak to them, maybe what they are celebrating. From there, I treat each stem like a narrative element, texture adds depth, color creates mood, and shape brings movement. The result is an arrangement that feels intentional, personal, and expressive. Something that doesn’t just sit in a space, but really says something.
6. Do you have a favorite flower or arrangement?
I try my hardest not to get too attached because I know I can’t keep them all :)
7. What’s next for Studio Thorn?
Studio Thorn is growing in a really exciting, heartfelt way. I’m saying yes to projects that feel aligned, leaning into more custom work, and continuing to refine my signature style. I’m planning a workshop for early next year and also thinking of ways to expand outside of NYC.
